The Straughn Pee Wee Football Club was
honored Saturday night for winning the Tri-County Football
Association championship.
The Tigers, under the direction of
Head Coach Sandy McVay, finished the season with an unbeaten 8-0
record. The team also did not allow a single point to be
scored.
“This was a very special team. This
bunch touched our hearts this year,” McVay said.
After the team was introduced and
given trophies, McVay remarked afterwards about the team’s
unity.
“They played as a group. We didn’t
have any real outstanding players.” McVay said.
The Tigers may be in a rebuilding mode
next season as 20 of the team’s 28 players will move up to the
Straughn junior varsity. Nine of the players pulled double duty by
going both ways.
Team members honored include Shannon
Hutto, Ronnie Butler, Eric Dalton, Chase Turner, Lance Myers,
Anthony Kelly, Justin Odom, Danny Grantham, Cass Sasser, Hunter
Norris, Alphonzo Greeley, Justin Savage, Cory Cowart, Malcom Jones,
Jerrod Armstrong, Matthew Mallard, Ryan Cottle, Frank Carpetner,
Jamie Straughn, Josh Page, Josh Cottle, Josh Winter, Brock Moore,
Dustin Worthey, Matthew Daniels and Brent Hinds.
McVay’s coaching staff includes Jerry
Myers, William McVay, Robin Hobbs and Cory McVay.
Three of Straughn’s toughest games
came against teams from Covington County. The Tigers beat Andalusia
14-0, Florala 20-0 and Red Level 28-0.
“They were a very well-coached team,”
said Andalusia Pee Wee Head Coach Vonnie Howard of the Tigers. “They
had us pretty intimidated, but it was early in the season when we
played them.”
In three seasons as the Head Coach of
the Straughn Pee Wee Football Club, McVay has compiled an impressive
record of 21-1-1 and two league titles. |
