began boarding up homes and businesses Sunday -- unsure of what Hurricane Irene
might bring. After being the targets of three hurricanes within past two months,
many residents aren't taking any chances with Mother Nature. ((sot:

flooding and stuff" ((nat on the beach)) While daring beachgoers enjoyed
the heavy surf, others heeded evacuation orders ... and headed inland. Many

here and we'd just rather be safe than sorry ... especially with a
seven-and-a-half month old boy. And if we lose power, we won't be able to make
his bottles." Rainfall is the main concern now. Low-lying areas in eastern
North Carolina are still trying to recover from Hurricane Floyd ... which dumped
a record 20-inches of rain just four weeks ago. Folks here say it's time for

hurricane relief drive was held this weekend to send money and supplies to those
in need. Lawrence Transportation Systems sponsored the drive because employees
wanted to help those who are still living in shelters or don't have electricity.

Two Universities say lecture notes posted on
the web are not just a bad idea, they're illegal. Berkley and UCLA have sent out
letters warning students that posting notes violates copyright laws and campus
rules. But a disclaimer on one of the websites says the notes do NOT belong
to the professor or the university, but are the STUDENT's interpretation of what
was said...
A Roanoke native's success could bring big changes to the
Web. Jim Justice founded I-PIN, and turned it into a multi-million dollar
company. His software allows website operators to charge small fees for services
on websites, like music clips or greeting cards, without credit cards. Customers
type in a PIN number and the fee billed on their monthly ISP statement... one
catch, you have to be willing to give IPIN your ISP user name and password.

found a former nurse guilty of killing six of his patients.

injections while working at the Vermillion County hospital in the early 1990's.
Prosecutors say, while Majors was on duty, a death occurred every day.

A study, that was NOT used in court, linked Majors to as many as 130
deaths at the hospital, but prosecutors only charged him in the seven strongest

Authorities believe they know the cause of fire last night that left
one Roanoke County family homeless. (------------) [VO-NAT]

The Fire Marshall says it was
started by two juveniles playing with candles inside the home -- while the
father was outside in the garage. It took fire fighters more than 2 hours to
battle the blaze and they even ran out of water at one point. Investigators are
still trying to determine where in the house the fire started.

Falwell and Mel White are each bringing 200 supporters to Lynchburg later this
week to open a dialog on homosexuality. They say their meeting will NOT be
disturbed by radical activists. But groups on both ends of the political
spectrum say they'll be in Lynchburg too, protesting the meeting. Gay activists
in the Oral Majority say White shouldn't sit down with Falwell. Likewise,
the Reverend Fred Phelps and his supporters say Falwell is too lenient on gays.
All the
recent rainfall has helped with the local water shortage.. But it's ALSO
